Minimum Wages in Canada (2023), These Provinces Pay Highest!

Minimum wage in Canada (2023) will change and the prices come into effect at different times of the year. The minimum wage is the amount of payment an employer has to pay to their employee for the work. If you are working in Canada on a Canadian work visa then you must know that the minimum wage differs according to the province and territory.

What’s the Minimum Wage in Canada?

As mentioned above, minimum wage in Canada refers to the minimum amount of payment an employer pays the employee. Moreover, it is natural for the minimum wage to rise at various times across the year. 

Below, we will mention some of the provinces that pay the highest amount of hourly minimum wages to employees. Let’s take a look then!

Yukon- $16.77

Employers in Yukon cannot hire an employee at a salary lower than $16.77 per hour. Yukon increased the previous minimum amount by 6.7% and the new minimum wage came into effect on 01 April, 2023. No other province offers as much minimum wage as Yukon. 

British Columbia- $16.75

Since 1st June, 2023, the minimum wage in British Columbia has increased to being $16.75. In 2022, it was only $15.65 but then it was increased by $1.10, which is a 6.9% raise. 

This is a good thing for workers of British Columbia as this province offers the second highest minimum wage among all the provinces and territories of Canada. The provincial government of British Columbia has increased the minimum wage to reflect the inflation rates of 2022. 

Ontario- $16.55

The new minimum wage in Ontario is set to come into effect starting 1st October, 2023. So, currently, the minimum wage in Ontario is $15.50 on an hourly basis. After increasing the minimum wage, Ontario is set to see a rise by 6.5% in the amount. 

Nunavut- $16

Nunavut announced this minimum wage of $16 per hour back in April of 2020. One thing to note here is that when Nunavut announced this minimum wage, no other territory or province was offering this much minimum wage amount to be paid. 

Quebec- $15.25

Quebec raised its minimum wage from $14.25 per hour to $15.25 on 1st May, 2023. Employees enjoyed a total of 7% rise in their minimum wage.
