What’s the Safe Third Country Agreement?

Well, this agreement is basically about giving the refugees coming from troubled countries to ask for protection in either the US or Canada. They can do so in any country they first arrive in. 

The U.S. President, Joe Biden, is visiting Canada for the first time since his tenure started two years ago. This visit is to update the Agreement. Both the countries have announced to make reformations. 

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, is meeting the US president. They will be discussing a few important issues regarding the Ukraine-Russia situation, and the situation in Haiti. 

The Agreement is going to get updates, and this means that the whole Canada-US border will be under the Agreement. Now, this will also include undesignated as well as designated ports of entry. This Agreement clearly states that the refugees have the option to request refugee protection. Unless they are an exception to the Agreement, they do qualify for this claim. 

Agreement applies to refugees who come by train or at an airport, or at Canada-US border crossings. However, if a refugee was refused in the US, and they were in transit via Canada, and if they are coming to an airport, only then can they ask for refugee protection in Canada. 

Canada made a pact to welcome over 15,000 migrants from the Western Hemisphere. This is bound to happen over the upcoming years. Canada is welcoming so many migrants on a humanitarian basis.
