Ontario is set to pay under represented groups to train as a truck driver. This is to help battle labor shortages faced in the province, especially in the truck drivers industry. Ontario will pay newcomers to become truck driver, and among newcomers, there will be other under-represented groups included too such as women. This new measure will also ensure that those who have never thought of making a career in truck driving, will likely consider the job.

Ontario is about to invest around $1.3 million in this new measure that would help in fixing the workforce shortage. Under this initiative, the province would pay to get training of truck driving to women, new immigrants into the country and those groups of people that are not so well represented.

On this, the head of the Provincial Government of Ontario, Doug Ford says, “As we build Ontario, we’re going to need all hands-on deck. That’s why our government is working hard to ensure that all skilled occupations are more accessible and welcoming for women and all under-represented groups.”
The investment is set to help 54 people get training so that they can learn how to become a truck driver. But this is not the total number of job vacancies available in Ontario for truck drivers. Actually there are around 6,100 jobs for truck drivers in Ontario alone. And, they all want to be filled up as soon as possible. So if you know how to drive a truck, this might be a really good opportunity for you to consider and make a career in Ontario.
How will People get Training?
This is an awesome program led by Women’s Trucking Federation of Canada and it will provide a total of 200 hours of truck training to its participants. These training hours are necessary if you want to get AZ and DZ licenses. AZ is for tractor trailers, and DZ is for straight truck licenses.
Under this program, participants would get both hands-on training as well as training from virtuality reality systems. They’ll learn how to perform maneuvers, conduct inspections, operate a commercial vehicle, maintain vehicles, and understand commercial vehicle systems and controls.
Benefits of Working as a Truck Driver in Ontario
There are many benefits of receiving truck driving training under this initiative. Also, the aim of the provincial government is to remove obstacles that hinder women getting a truck driver job in Ontario. Hence, participants would be eligible to receive around $1,000 as childcare support and transportation. On top of that, they would also be eligible for $400 for weekly allowance, and $300 for equipment.
This initiative will cover:
- Awareness regarding human trafficking
- Defense training
- Forklift operation
- Workplace violence and harassment
Moreover, trucking jobs pay well. A truck driver, on an average, gets paid $24 for an hour. And if they have more years of experience, they may even earn $32.34 on an hourly basis. This means a salary of around $63,063 in a year for truck drivers in Ontario. And if someone is going extra kilometers, they would surely be paid for it.
On top of that, there are more than enough trucking jobs available. And the need to hire truck drivers is greater in Ontario than anywhere else in Canada. So, this means an easy job securing opportunity!
The first in-person training began on 1st July in Kitchener-Waterloo, Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, as well as in London.
