Since March of 2023, Canada has been facing a desperate need for workers in its healthcare industry. Statistics show that around 144,500 jobs available in healthcare industry of Canada. Thus, as a way to solve this dire situation, Canada announced Express Entry Category-based draws which will focus on inviting workers from certain categories.

A Demand for Healthcare Workers in Canada
As mentioned above, Canada is looking for healthcare professionals to fill in the 144,500 vacant job positions. Only by looking at this huge number one can imagine the kind of labor shortage Canada must be experiencing as of now.
The thing is, after the pandemic, Canada experienced a huge demand for workers in all sorts of industries. However, the health industry took the biggest blow and demanded most of the workers. But since there weren’t enough professionals out there to hire while the need for workers was ever-growing, many vacant positions had to be filled with under-skilled workers. And this hindered business growth.
On top of this, Canada also has an aging population, where thousands are expected to retire by 2030. This will further put a restraint on the healthcare industry while it is struggling to reduce labor gaps.
So, as a way to combat this workforce shortage, IRCC has made some changes to the flagship immigration pathway, which is the Express Entry. Express Entry Category-based selection will be conducted to invite eligible candidates from certain categories only.

The reason why these categories are targeted is because they are the ones with the highest need for workers. As we saw above, healthcare occupations are in dire need for professionals. The other occupations are in similar situations, and hence were chosen as separate categories to invite candidates.
