How long does it take to Sponsor Parents to Canada?

If you will be staying in Quebec, your family sponsorship application may take 48 months to get processed. However, on the other hand, when staying outside Quebec, the same application should take about just 23 months to get processed. 

This huge difference between application processing times is because Canada and Quebec have signed an agreement. This agreement allows Quebec to make and modify its immigration targets.

Canada Parents & Grandparents Sponsorship

The Canada Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents so they can become permanent residents of Canada. 

However, there are some conditions that permit someone to sponsor their parents and grandparents. Let’s see what makes an individual eligible to sponsor their parents and grandparents. 

Am I eligible to sponsor?

An individual can sponsor their own as well as adopted parents and grandparents if they meet the following requirements:

  • must be at least 18 years of age
  • must receive an invitation to apply for the sponsorship
  • they need to be living in Canada
  • must show enough money to sponsor 
  • must be a Canadian permanent resident, Canadian citizen, or be registered as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • you as well as your parents and grandparents need to meet all requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act along with Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations

Who cannot sponsor?

You cannot sponsor your parents and grandparents if:

  • your age is less than 18 years
  • didn’t receive an invitation to apply
  • you aren’t a citizen/ permanent resident of Canada/ or registered under the Canadian Indian Act
  • you are a temporary resident
  • don’t have enough proof of money
  • your PR application is being processed
  • you won’t be living in Canada when applying for sponsorship and/ or when the sponsored becomes PRs
  • your address must be in Canada both at the time of submitting application and when IRCC makes a decision on the application

Other things that make you ineligible for sponsorship:

  • person sponsoring is in jail/ prison/ penitentiary 
  • Didn’t pay the- immigration loan, performance bond, court ordered family support payments
  • didn’t give financial support to someone you sponsored in the past
  • you declared bankruptcy and still not discharged
  • received social assistance which was not disability related
  • received removal order
  • were convicted of a violent criminal offense

Whom can I sponsor?

You can sponsor your parents and grandparents, it doesn’t matter if they are biological or adopted. 

If the person you’re about to sponsor is divorced, you must submit separate applications for them.  

How to know if my parents or grandparents are eligible?

Your parents and grandparents that are being sponsored must be eligible as well. Moreover, they need to provide:

  • All documents and forms with their application
  • Provide any information which is needed during the processing 

Who can I not sponsor?

You cannot sponsor:

  • your in-laws
  • someone who’s inadmissible to Canada
