The immigrants population in Canada has been seeing a rapid increase year by year. Due to this, the nation is also seeing a record growth in its population. Immigrants value in the eyes of Canadians is good, since the foreign workers are the ones helping the nation grow.
Growth in Canada’s Population due to Immigrants
Immigrants arriving in Canada resulted in a population boom. This has been happening because Canada is so warmly welcoming immigrants each and every year, plus inviting even more and more newcomers as the years progresses.
Now, this boom in immigration trend has helped Canada set a new population growth record!
When we see the recent data from Statistics Canada, we see that the country’s whole population is almost over 39 million! In a single year, Canada has been able to grow its population by more than 1M people! Between 1st January, 2022 and 1st January, 2023, around 1,050,100 people helped in growing the record high population growth.
In around 26 years, the population of this nation will double in case this trend continues.
Canada Invites Non-permanent Residents
In 2022, Canada received around 607,780 temporary immigrants or non-permanent residents. This was another achievement for the nation for inviting so many temporary residents in just a single year.
In addition, it’s not as if the immigrants only went to a few provinces to settle. In fact, all the territories and provinces of Canada saw an almost equal population growth. They all saw an increase in giving out study permits, work permits, as well as accommodation needs.
Since Canada invited such an enormous number of newcomers in a single year, it again set a record in 2022. These records have been possible only because of the constant, hand working efforts from the Canadian Government to use the means of immigration to address the labor gap. The country is willing to accept huge numbers of skilled workers and fill up the labor market.
According to the latest Immigration Levels Plan (2023-2025), we can see that the country is planning on inviting, on an average, a total of 500,000 newcomers till 2025!
The factor of immigration is a leading cause of Canada’s population growth. This is possible through three basic groups of foreign population: permanent residents, skilled workers, and international students.
Permanent Residents
The last year’s data from IRCC indicates that more than 437,000 new PRs came to Canada. This increase in number even exceeded the Immigration Levels Plan for 2022-2024 which was only 431,000+.
More than half of these PRs came via economic immigration programs in 2022. On the other hand, 22.2% came to Canada through family-class immigrants, whereas 17.2% were protected persons or refugees.
Skilled Workers
Around 608,420 work permits were issued in the year of 2022. 77% of these permit holders came through the International Mobility Program or IMP. This translates to around 472,070 permit holders. And, the leftover 136,350 permits via TFWP, the Temporary Foreign Workers Program.
International Students
In the previous year, around 551,400 new foreign students came to Canada. Canada has good universities and provides better education too. The major countries from where most of these students came are India, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Nigeria, Iran, etc.
