Canada Open Work Permits for Outland Applications Now Available

Canada open work permit used to be available for inland applications, or for those living in Canada. However, now they are also available for outland applications. An outland application is an application made from outside of Canada. A Canadian work visa is of two types: closed work permit and open work permit. A closed work permit would allow the visa holder to only work for a certain employer, whereas an open work permit would allow the visa holder to work for any employer.

As mentioned above, the Canada open work permit is now available to apply for those not living in Canada. Before this measure came around, only those who were living in Canada could apply for an open work permit. But the new measure is set to help the family members of permanent residents to be able to work for anyone in Canada.

One of the things that IRCC keeps in high regard is family reunification. When an individual immigrates to Canada and gains permanent residence, they must miss their family back home. Some of these permanent residents also have dependent family members that they cannot leave behind. Hence, this new allowance of open work permits for those applying from outside Canada is set to advantage a lot of family members. 

Basically, if you came to Canada as a partner, dependent child, or spouse of a Canadian permanent resident, then you can apply for an open work permit. Previously, only those who were already living in Canada on a Temporary Resident Visa and were a spouse, child, or family member of a PR were eligible for an open work permit. 

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is hoping to process spousal sponsorship applications in under 12 months. 

Who’s Eligible?

Let’s see who are eligible to apply for an open work permit below-

  • A spouse, dependent child, common-law partner, or conjugal partner being sponsored and they must be in Canada already
  • The work permit applicant could already be a temporary resident permit holder
  •  Those who graduated from a designated learning institution and are eligible for a Post Graduate Work Permit
  • The applicant could be a destitute student 
  • A dependent family member of a PR applicant
  • A spouse, dependent child, or a common-law partner of a high or low skilled worker
  • An international student’s dependent family member
  • An Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program’s applicant’s spouse or common-law partner
  • The applicant could be a refugee, a refugee claimant, protected person or their family member. 
  • They are under an unforeseeable removal order 
  • They are a young worker who is participating in special program
  • Those with an employer-specific permit and benign at risk of abuse in relation to their job in Canada or are being abused.
