Yes, Canada is hiring as well as increasing the income. In a big move made by the governement, the federal government has decided to increase the salary in Canada. And, by how much, you ask? 7%! Yes, the federal government of Canada will be increasing the minimum wage by a total of 7%.
Hike in Minimum Wage
To the employees who work on minimum wage, we bet you would jump from your seats after hearing this great news. Federal minimum wage is increased by 7% in Canada!
This is because the inflation in the country has been settling in and the government wants to make sure that the workers on minimum wage would be able to make do with the current situation. This means the minimum wage will be increasing by $1.10.
Canadian Minister of Labour, Seamus O’Regan Jr, believes that the workers have all the rights to have a better minimum wage. According to the government, the economy would be able to grow only when the employees are looked after. When the workers are happy, the economy would prosper as well.
Currently, the federal minimum wage is only $15.55 per hour. However, after the hike, the minimum wage will be $16.65 per hour! It’s raining moneyyy!!
Who would be benefiting off of this advantage? The workers as well as interns who are working in sectors which are actually federally regulated private sectors. Thai means employees in banks, courier services, postal services, interprovincial rail, air, road, and marine transportation. All the employees, workers, and interns in these sectors would definitely gain from this hike.
As for the employers, they must pay this increased minimum wage to their employees.
What are my employment rights as an immigrant?
Newcomers to Canada are generally taken advantage of. Since they don’t know much about the working conditions of the country, some people try to take advantage of them by giving them low-paying jobs or exploiting their skills.
This is the reason why IRCC or the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada time to time spread awareness about the basic things, such as employment rights in Canada.
Employment rights include:
- The employer should inform their employees about these rights.
- Workers have the right to healthcare services too.
- Employees should have a signed copy of their employment contract. They receive this employment agreement on the first day of the joining or before starting their employment. In the contract, all the conditions of work are mentioned.
- They also have the right to get job training.
Under no circumstances can the employer mistreat their employees. Mistreatment may include taking away the passport or work visa of the workers, forcing their employees to do unsafe or unauthorized work, forcing them to do overtime work (it’s okay if the overtime work is mentioned in the agreement), forcing workers to work while they are wounded, or sick, and changing the immigration status of an employee. These are mistreatments that a worker shouldn’t have to go through. However, this doesn’t mean that the mistreatments are of only this kind.
