Canada Announces Changes to Protect Students

Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, announced new measures to protect international students from fraud. He made an announcement on 27th October, 2023, that Canada’s government will be working towards strengthening the international students program.

This will be done only when the government addresses the scam that students have to face. International students are more prone to falling in traps set by scammers and fraudsters. They don’t recognize the fake letters of acceptance that fraudsters hand to them. Hence, these measures will definitely be fruitful for the student community.

New Changes in International Student Program

The new measures are:

  • From 1st December, 2023, post-secondary Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) will have to verify every letter of acceptance directly with IRCC. This will ensure that the letter of acceptance is not fake and hence, the student’s application is genuine, and they can be granted a study permit. Earlier this year, about 700 international students’ letters of acceptance were found to be fake. So, to avoid a similar situation from happening again, IRCC’s new measure will surely be effective.
  • Before the fall of 2024, IRCC will launch a “Recognized Institutions” framework for certain Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). The “Recognized Institutions” framework will help in setting a higher standard for services, support as well as outcomes for international students. For the DLIs, they will receive prioritized processing for those students wishing to study in their institutions.
  •  The last announcement made was regarding the first review of the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). IRCC will conduct this review and make the necessary changes in the immigration program to address labour shortages. PGWP will have to calibrate according to the labour market needs, regional labour needs and Francophone immigration goals.
