Language Test Requirements for Canadian Immigration

There are certain language test requirements for Canadian immigration that everyone needs to fulfill in case they want to go to Canada. Even if you wish to move to Canada for further studies, or work in the country, you are going to need to take a language test.

What’s the importance of a language test?

If you wish to establish yourself in an English speaking country, and you are coming from a non-speaking nation, then taking a language test is really necessary. Like we said before, language tests are an absolute part of the process of moving to Canada. They prove that you would be able to communicate with other people in the country without much problem. Hence, this makes this test all the more important.

Most of the people go to Canada in order to earn a living. Now, there are many ways to immigrate to Canada but one of the easiest ones is via the federal and provincial skilled worker program. One more thing to know here is that each skilled worker program has its own language test score eligibility criteria. Thus, how much score you’re going to need to qualify depends on the immigration program you’re choosing.

Canada approves these tests

Since you have decided to move to Canada, you also need to know which language tests are approved by the government so you can choose from them which to take.

In case you are taking the test for English language, there are two choices for you:

CELPIP (General Test)

Let’s know a bit about CELPIP. It has four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It’s a three hours long test, and costs about $300. You may get the results 3-4 days after taking the test.

IELTS (General Training)

IELTS also has the same four modules:  Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. The cost is almost the same too.

In case you are taking the French language Test, there are also two kinds of test to choose from:

TEF Canada (Test d’évaluation de français)

For those who are choosing to go to Quebec can take this test. TEF assesses the ability of non-native French speakers to communicate in French. This is the one and only accepted test for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). The cost of the test depends on the place where the test is being given.

TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français)

It’s almost the same as TEF as it assesses the expression and comprehension skills of non-native French speakers in French. It has 3 mandatory sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, use of language structures. As it was in the case of TEF, the test’s cost depends on the location.
