New Youth Mobility Agreement Signed between Canada & Iceland
On 4 Aug, the government of Canada announced the agreement it signed with the Icelandic Government. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and Iceland’s Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation signed a new Youth Mobility Agreement.

The agreement was signed to facilitate the movement of youths of both the countries and open up more space for these youths to grow. Under this agreement, Icelandic youth can work in Canada and immigrate there through International Experience Canada. While the youth of Canada can use an equivalent Icelandic immigration pathway to work in Iceland.
This measure is open to those aged between 18-30. Moreover, they can stay in another country for about 12 months and may even get to extend this period for 12 more months.
What was the need for this Agreement?
The purpose of this agreement is to open up more global opportunities for Canadian youth. In this world where there is much importance of global experience, it is good that the Canadian government acknowledges this. The government is coming up with measures to create opportunities where youth would be able to gain global experience.
They would not only gain work experience in another country but also get to understand and absorb the culture of that country and learn a few things from them too. This international experience would help them contribute to the global economy.
When will this be implemented?
It is expected that all the requirements would be met in 2024, and that’s when this measure will be implemented, according to both the governments. Moreover, it is also expected that there would be more job opportunities, travel options, and skill learning opportunities for Canadian youth once this agreement comes into effect.
Apart from new doors of opportunity opening up, the ties between Canada and Iceland will also further strengthen. Youth of Iceland would develop life skills, explore new cultures in the Canadian society and get to learn common values. Similarly, Canadian youth would have the opportunity to learn the same.
