Canada recently announced changes to its Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), which will come into effect starting 08th November 2024. On November 8, 2024, the hourly wage for high-wage stream foreign workers will rise. Workers will see a 20%, setting wages at least $5 to $8 higher than current levels.
TFWP New Reforms
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is meant to fill job vacancies when Canadian PRs and citizens are not available for the job positions. However, there are some people who do not respect the program’s integrity and try to take advantage of workers. Hence, the government of Canada brought along some stricter rules and regulations for applying through the TFWP.
On August 26, 2024, Canada’s government pledged a 90-day review of the TFW Program so it could work on bringing along some rules. These updates, led by Minister Randy Boissonnault of Employment and Workforce Development, aim to balance Canada’s labor needs with worker protections.
With this wage hike, more jobs will fall under the stricter low-wage stream rules, which require employers to meet conditions related to housing, transportation, and domestic recruitment. This approach will also emphasize the need to hire Canadians first and international workers later on.
The reforms also target program misuse. Starting October 28, 2024, employers can no longer use attestations from accountants or lawyers to prove their business legitimacy.
If further requirements need to be made, the Canadian government will bring further changes.
