Canada Minister visited India, represented Canada at G20 Meeting

Canada Minister visited India, where he represented Canada at the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Ministerial Meeting. He concluded his three day meetings in India on 28 July, 2023. There, he showed support to India’s agendas and policies regarding climate change measures. 

Canada is already a world leader when it comes to implementing climate change policies. But if it wants to continue welcoming so many immigrants as it plans, then it has to keep implementing rules. And so this is why, Canada needs to come up with measures to improve its climate change policies.

Canada Minister Visited India 

The recent visit of the Canadian Minister Steven Guilbeault to India has been quite successful, where he met with the Indian Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change and the Minister of Jal Shakti. The aim of this visit was that India and Canada keep working together and coming up with ways to tackle global issues.

In the meetings, Minister Guilbeault made stops in Delhi and Chennai where he discussed issues regarding climate change and climate sustainability. Canada’s representative, Steven Guilbeault, came to the meeting so he could show Canada’s supportive instance to India’s agenda. 

Moreover, Canada only recently became the first country in the G20 to disclose a framework that instructs the phasing out of the inefficient fossil fuel subsidies. Originally, Canada would have publicly disclosed this framework in the next two years. 

What was Discussed in the Meeting?

In the meeting, he mainly discussed about the following:

  • G20 should take the lead on a commitment in order to phase out the unabated fossil fuel
  • The climate change ambitions and hopes need to increase so that 1.5°C temperature rise could be kept in reach. These ambitions include the upcoming 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). 
  • He also discussed the effective implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Further, GBF would be supporting the developing countries. 
  • Minister Guilbeault discussed that there should be a legally binding global instrument that would end plastic pollution by the year 2024. 

Being a climate activist himself, Minister Guilbeault values India’s young climate and environmental advocates. Further, the minister hosted a discussion with such young changemakers. In this discussion, one of the Environment and Climate Change Youth Council members from Alberta, Michael Girum also joined virtually to share his perspective as a young Canadian. 

Steven Guilbeault delivered a powerful speech at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. Apart from discussing the perspective of the youth, he also held round-table discussions with business leaders of India, and leaders of environmental non-governmental organizations. 

Aside from this meeting, Canada also recently announced that it would be contributing $450 million to Green Climate Fund (GCF). This would be the second replenishment to the GCF. Green Climate Fund is the world’s largest climate change fund and also a very important funding mechanism of the Paris Agreement.

In conclusion, Canada is grateful that India has been ambitious, and this meeting just shows the result of G20 and hopes that the upcoming COP28 would be successful as well.
