On February 10, 2021, Canada welcomed 654 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residence.
Candidates who had a minimum score of 720 were invited by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
In the latest draw, only candidates seeking a nomination from a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) were invited, which is why the cut-off of the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) was high. Candidates who have been nominated by an Express Entry-aligned PNP automatically receive additional score of 600 points. The CRS score for today’s draw was 21 points lower than that of the previous PNP-specific invitation round held on January 20, 2021.
Express Entry is Canada’s application management system for three federal immigration programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class.
Candidates are given points based on the CRS score in these programmes, as well as certain PNPs. These points are awarded based on the human capital factors of the candidate, such as age, education, work experience, and English or French language ability. An individual or a couple may be awarded these points. To be invited to apply for permanent residency, Express Entry candidates do not need to have prior experience in Canada. They don’t need a job offer, but some extra points could be earned by them.
An Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency is secured by the highest-scoring candidates by frequent invitation rounds for Express Entry. Once an application has been sent, the IRCC will make a conclusive statement and, if the application is approved, will provide a confirmation of permanent residency. For approved permanent residents, the final step is to settle in Canada and to apply for a PR Card. These individuals have legally immigrated to Canada at this point and will ultimately qualify for citizenship.
The tie-breaking rule is enforced by the IRCC in the event of a tie between candidates. In order to obtain an invitation, candidates who had a CRS score of 720 or more had to apply their Express Entry profile before August 14, 2020, at 6:51:00 UTC in the most current draw.
2020 was a record-breaking year for Express Entry, in spite of the coronavirus pandemic. By the end, 108,350 ITAs were issued by Canada to Express Entry candidates. It is projected to be much bigger this year, as the IRCC has increased immigration targets to compensate for the reduced number of new permanent residents accepted last year to the country.
Through four program-specific draws, IRCC has so far released 10,654 ITAs in 2021.
As the IRCC has enhanced immigration targets to compensate for the reduced number of new permanent residents admitted to Canada last year, the year 2021 is projected to see further increases in the ITAs. In order to meet these targets, IRCC is also expected to rely more extensively on potential immigrants and skilled workers already in Canada, in part because of the ongoing coronavirus measures and the existing problems associated with border closures and restrictions.
In 2021, the IRCC has not yet held an all-program draw.
This year, Canada is expected to accept 401,000 new immigrants, of which 108,500 are expected to come through a programme managed by Express Entry. It is projected that these targets will grow over the next three years to 110,500 in 2022 and 113,750 in 2023.
