In a draw conducted April 9, the Government of Canada welcomed 606 candidates in Express Entry to apply for a permanent Canadian citizenship. For this invitation round, the minimum score of the Comprehensive Ranking System – CRS score was 22 points lower than for the previous provincial nominee program draw held on 18 March.
Canada proceeds to administer frequent drawings, eliminating doubt about the likelihood that Express Entry draws would take place since concrete steps have been introduced to limit the spread of coronavirus. In addition, on April 1, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) tweeted that it still maintains Express Entry rounds of invitations, and verified that it continues to receive and process immigration applications.
The program-specific draw for today was the second in less than a month to select candidates for the provincial nominee program. Since March 18, IRCC also conducted two other program-specific draws of invitation via the Express Entry system, targeting primarily Canadian Experience Class candidates and those with provincial nominations.
Canada’s primary source of skilled foreign workers is the Express Entry Program. It currently administers the profiles of applicants for three Federal High Skilled Economic class immigration programs — the Federal Skilled Workers Class, the Federal Skilled Trades Class and the Canadian Experience Class.
Qualified candidates are placed in the Express Entry pool on the basis of a CRS score that takes into account factors such as age, education, experience and competence in English and French. A certain number of candidates who are highest in category are selected through frequent draws from the Express Entry pool, and are invited to apply for Canadian permanent residency.
Today’s draw is the 8th of 2020, which brings the total to 23,206 ITAs being issued so far this year.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) used its tie-break rule in the April 09 draw and the date and time used was 11:29:51 UTC on December 18, 2020. This implies that in this invitation process, all candidates with a CRS score above 698 and those with a score of 698 who sent their profiles before this stated date and time have received an ITA.
Express Entry candidates with scores below the established CRS cut-off have a range of possible opportunities to boost their final CRS score, the most important of which is a provincial nomination. The provincial nomination results in an extra 600 CRS points which essentially ensures an invitation to apply for permanent residency in Canada.
After the previous All-Program Draw conducted on March 4, many of Canada’s Express Entry-aligned provincial nomination streams have issued invitations, including streams in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. The various streams of the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) have already conducted more than 30 draws since the beginning of 2020.
Through the 2020-2022 Immigration Level Plan, the Government of Canada is targeting 341,000 immigrants in 2020, 351,000 in 2021, and another 361,000 in 2022. PNP admissions are expected to rise by 20% by 2022.
