On November 5, Canada held its most recent Express Entry draw.
With a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score requirement of 478, a total of 4,500 invitations went to Express Entry candidates.
In this draw, French-speaking candidates are qualified to receive more points in the CRS points calculator. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently announced that French-speaking candidates are now awarded 25 extra points for their language skills, up from 15, and that bilingual candidates are now awarded 50 points, up from 30.
Usually, every two weeks, IRCC conducts Express Entry draws, but this draw was postponed in order to update all of the profiles affected in the Express Entry pool.
This is the third instance where 4,500 invitations were issued by Canada at a time, the largest number of invitations issued in one draw.
Canada unveiled its multi-year immigration plan at the end of October, promising to accept over 400,000 new permanent residents annually until 2023. More than 100,000 of these new immigrants will arrive in the Federal High Skilled category via Express Entry-managed programs.
For three federal economic class systems, Express Entry is Canada’s immigration application management system: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class. Candidates are given a ranking based on the CRS in these programs, as well as certain Provincial Nominee Program (PNPs). Points are awarded in English or French based on the human capital factors of the applicant, such as age, education, work experience and language abilities.
An Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residency in an Express Entry invitation round is received by the highest scoring candidates. Canada invited the top 4,500 applicants to apply for permanent residency in today’s draw.
The tie-breaking rule is enforced by the IRCC in the event of a tie between candidates. So, for this draw, candidates with a CRS score of 478 or more had to submit their Express Entry profile at 22:44:19 UTC before October 26, 2020 to receive an invitation.
For all program drawings, the CRS requirement has typically hovered above 470 this year. The Federal Skilled Trades Program-only drawing trades workers with a CRS of 415 on August 6 invited, and previous Canadian Experience Class drawings dipped into the 440s only. PNP-only drawings have higher standards since an additional 600 CRS points are automatically awarded to Express Entry candidates who obtain a provincial nomination. For Express Entry candidates who have a lower CRS score, PNPs provide alternate paths to permanent residence.
The latest drawing takes to 87,350 the total number of ITAs issued in 2020. This year is shaping up to be a new Express Entry record-breaking year, as the amount of ITAs issued to date is the highest it has ever been.
