The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, made the announcement on 10th May, 2023 at the Montréal Climate Summit. Therefore, he said that up to $187 million to spend to improve air and economy in Canada from the Low Carbon Economy Fund’s Leadership stream would be use to support projects in Quebec. The Quebec government will distribute these cash via new partnership contracts.

In order to maintain clean air and create an economic recovery for both today and tomorrow, Canadians are pushing for serious climate action. Every day, programs like the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Fund assist partners across the nation in reducing pollution, building strong, durable towns as well as generating quality employment in a developing, durable, and clean economy.
Investment in the Clean Air and Economy
The funding will be divide into two parts:
- For low-income households in the province, up to $60 million will be provided to assist them in switching from home heating oil to more cost-effective and efficient solutions.
- Secondly, Up to $127 million will be use to fund projects that would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 and are consistent with Quebec’s and Canada’s targets of net-zero emissions by 2050.
By 2030, these initiatives will build on the $261 million in federal funding that the Quebec government has leveraged through four programs since 2017, resulting in up to 825,000 tones of annual greenhouse gas emissions reductions, or the removal of 252,750 cars from Quebec’s roads annually.
Important Note
The Northern First Nations Home Retrofit Program in Saskatchewan, the waste emissions reduction projects in Alberta, the home heat pump retrofits in Atlantic Canada, and the replacement of oil-fired boilers with electric models at a YMCA in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador have all received funding from the Low Carbon Economy Fund.
Innovative technologies in industries including chemicals and fertilizers, cement and concrete, forestry and agriculture, electricity and manufacturing will be invest through the Low Carbon Economy Fund.
